Most young people are like duck out of water when it comes to mobile text messaging where slang and acronyms are used to keep outsiders guessing. (i. e.) TTYL –Talk To You Later… Looking at young people’s small-culture codes, whether it is wide-ranging alternative lexicons or media-influenced or technological vocabularies that shade into jargon, revalues young people. Language crossing is also a feature of much slang, bringing in to play the question of linguistic imperialism. Young people develop their own language to differentiate themselves from mainstream culture but… Aren’t we loosing touch with correct English usage? This paper will bring to light the resemblance between SMS and Ebonics.
