Individual Needs of Teachers and their Professional Development

The yardstick, being in use in general, for gauging a teacher’s efficacy is the result in the form of credit points or the percentage of marks obtained by their pupils in the evaluation tests. But the impact the teachers make on their students is a variable that depends much on the teacher’s competency in presenting themselves as well as the subject matter they deal with in the class room. Their effectiveness can best be attributed to the contentment they derive from their work, which in turn is based on the fulfillment of individual necessities. There have been volumes of deliberations, already, on this aspect of teacher’s needs. However we zero in our synergic efforts to the analysis of the individual needs of a teacher with regard to his/her role set. We discuss in depth the different unavoidable roles that make an effective interaction with a teacher, the consequent catalytic effect they cause, either in the positive or negative way, on the professional development of the teacher and the resultant situation that necessitates new needs indispensable to offset the crisis, especially when the catalytic effect is negative.
