English vocabulary has a remarkable range, flexibility and adaptability. Though words appear isolated on the printed page, in reality it is not so. We have to encourage students to explore how words in a language relate to each other. They are interrelated – both sequentially and verbally. Words are related to each other; they belong to word families. Hence it becomes mandatory to learn vocabulary to make meaning compatibility between them. The paper presents a detailed discussion of the basic techniques for presenting new words. A combination of techniques can be used to show the meaning of a word. Teachers can also think of other words that can be introduced as part of the vocabulary expansion activity. Teachers can encourage students to use a good dictionary to learn synonyms, collocations, pronunciation, word stress, syllable division, word class, usage and the varied meanings of a word.
