The paper would evaluate the role of grammar teaching in language pedagogy in the context of the current practice of Task-Based Language Teaching. It would have a look at this aspect and subsequently go on to show how grammar is, in fact, so important that it cannot be ignored. Hence the issue now is not whether grammar is to be taught or not but rather which grammar items need to be taught and how they are to be taught most effectively. The paper would seek answers for these questions and would draw upon the experiences that the author had while teaching a Proficiency Course batch in CIEFL(now EFLU), Hyderabad, as a part of the PGCTE Programme. Amongst the many experiences that the author had in teaching the above-mentioned course was that of learners using various communication strategies to evade the language difficulties they faced while performing tasks with the potential danger of including certain errors which would be difficult, if not possible, to get rid of. With this point in mind, the paper would look into the ways in which grammar instruction could be incorporated into Task-Based Language Teaching so that accuracy is not sacrificed at the alter of fluency.
